Section 2: Identifying what Information You Need

Magazines

Articles published in magazines (popular journals) are written for a general audience. Sometimes full text databases will include articles from both scholarly journals and magazines, so you must be able to tell the difference between the two.

Some general characteristics are:

  • The articles do not contain original research, but sometimes contain summaries and popular representations of research, making it accessible to a non-specialized audience
  • The assumed audience does not have specialized knowledge
  • Specialized vocabulary is not used without explanation
  • Pictures often accompany articles
  • The journals are often at least partially funded with advertisements

How can I find magazine articles?

  • Use a general index (print or online) that covers all topics, like Proquest or the Reader's Guide, and tells which magazines have published articles on various topics
