Locating Information: Call Numbers

Each book is given a call number that refers to its place on the shelves of the library. At American University we use Library of Congress call numbers.

Library of Congress uses a combination of letters and numbers to arrange books on the shelves by topic. Once you find some books on your topic, you can look on the shelves close to them and find other books on similar topics.

The call number for a book is placed on that book's spine.
