Who Cited Whom?

This guide was designed for those going through their tenure process. For assistance in using any of the databases or trying to determine the importance of a journal, Ask a Librarian.

Cited Reference

Use the following list of resources to find where an author, article or book has been cited. Recently published works may not yet have been cited by others.
Hint: To increase the chance of your work being cited, publish in journals that are covered in the following databases.

Web of Science Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AU Community only)  
(1983 to present) Science Citation Index
  Social Sciences Citation Index
The Web of Science remains the standard source for finding cited references in high-impact journals.
Directions:
1. Click on "Web of Science".
2. Select the appropriate citation database/s.
3. Click on "Cited Reference Search".
4. Perform search and follow the directions on the screen.

Academic Search Premier (Ebsco) (AU Community only)
Good for all topics. Shows how often a work has been cited by other articles in Academic Search Premier.
Directions:
1. Click on "Cited References" near the top of the page.
2. Perform a search, (e.g. jones m*).
3. Check the box next to results that have "Times Cited in this Database."
4. Click on "Find Citing Articles".

BioOne (AU Community only)
Over 65 high-impact biological, ecological and environmental sciences journals, eventually totalling over 200 titles. Cited references are from 1998 to present.
Directions:
Do an author or title search. If the work has been cited by another work covered in this database, the resulting records of the search will indicate "Cited by [number]".

Communication and Mass Media Complete (AU Community only)
Shows how often a work has been cited by other articles in Communication and Mass Media Complete.
Directions:
1. Click on "Cited References" near the top of the page.
2. Perform a search, (e.g. jones m*).
3. Check the box next to results that have "Times Cited in this Database."
4. Click on "Find Citing Articles".

Google Scholar
Provides cited references to books and articles.

PsycINFO (AU Community only) - from the American Psychological Association
Main psychology index. Cited references are mostly of articles and book chapters from 2001 to present but can be as far back as 1926. Some books are also covered.
Directions:
1. Click on "More Fields".
2. Put in the name of author (e.g. smith j$) or title of article.
3. Check the appropriate "Cited Reference" box.
4. Click on "Perform Search".
5. To confirm that the search results do cite the author or work, click on "Complete Reference" for each of the records and scroll down to the list of citations.

PubMed (Medline) - from the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health
Main biomedical index. Will provide the cited reference for articles that have been cited by journals in PubMed Central, a free archive of full-text biomedical and life sciences journals. Cited reference for only a small percentage of the articles indexed in PubMed will be available.
Directions:
1. Perform a search.
2. Click on "Links" on the right of the page. If the article has been cited by an article in PubMed Central, a "Cited in PMC" link will appear.

Social Services Abstracts (CSA) (AU Community only)
A social work and human services index. Cited references are from all journal articles covered in index from 2004 forward.
Directions:
Do an author or title search. If the work has been cited by another work covered in this database, the resulting records of the search will indicate "Cited by [number]".

Sociological Abstracts (CSA) (AU Community only)
Main sociology index. Cited references from core journals from 2002 forward; cited references from all other journals from 2004 forward.
Directions:
Do an author or title search. If the work has been cited by another work covered in this database, the resulting records of the search will indicate "Cited by [number]".

Worldwide Political Science Abstracts (CSA) (AU Community only)
Main political science index. Cited references are from core political science journals from 2001 forward, and from all journals covered in this database from 2004 forward.
Directions:
Do an author or title search. If the work has been cited by another work covered in this database, the resulting records of the search will indicate "Cited by [number]".

Journal Rankings/Impact Factor

Journal Citation Reports (AU Community only)
JCR presents quantifiable statistical data that provides a systematic way to evaluate the journals and their impact and influence. JCR Web has the latest five-year data on a journal. For information dating back further, one must consult the print/microfiche version:
Journal Citation Report. Sciences edition. (1999- )
Latest edition located in Ready Reference; previous editions in Reference Index/Abstracts. Call number: Q1.J3
Journal Citation Report. Social Sciences edition. (1998- )
Latest edition located in Ready Reference; previous editions in Reference Index/Abstracts. Call number: H1. 2945

Eigenfactor.org - from the University of Washington
Provides the Article Influence and Eigenfactor to scholarly journals, popular magazines, PhD theses, and newsprint in the natural and social sciences. The Article Influence is a measure of a journal's prestige based on per article citations and comparable to Impact Factor. The Eigenfactor is a measure of the overall value provided by all of the articles published in a given journal in a year.

Harzing.com
The Journal Quality List is a compilation of academic journal rankings from a number of sources in areas of Economics, Finance, Accounting, Management, and Marketing.

Journal-Ranking.com
Covers the journal titles from the Science Citation Index (SCI).

Journal's Manuscript Acceptance Rate

Many journals provide their acceptance/rejection rate on their Web site.

MLA Directory of Periodicals (AU Community only) - from the Modern Language Association
Contains information on journals covered in the MLA International Bibliography in the areas of language, literature, folklore and pedagogy. Provides the number of articles submitted and published for many--but not all--of the journals.
Directions:
1. Type in the title of the journal.
2. Click on the record.
3. In the section "Submission Information," the line "Articles" may contain "Number Submitted per Year" and "Published per Year."
