Behavioral momentum . SQAB invited preeminent tutorials, from basics to contemporary paradigms. 1998? 1 videocassette (ca. 59 min.). John Nevins argues that the mass-like aspect of behavior measured as resistance to change may be identified with the traditional construct of response strength. "In the metaphor of behavioral momentum, steady-state response rate is analogous to the velocity of a physical body moving under constant conditions. When responding is disrupted, the short-term change in response rate depends directly on the magnitude of the disrupter and inversely on an aspect of behavior that is analogous to inertial mass in Newtonian mechanics. This mass-like aspect of behavior, measured as resistance to change, may be identified with the traditional psychological construct of response strength. The tutorial will begin with examples of multiple-schedule research demonstrating that response rate and resistance to change are independent aspects of behavior, where response rate depends on response-reinforcer contingencies and resistance depends on stimulus-reinforcer relations. Data from these examples will be used to illustrate the calculation of the behavioral analog to inertial mass. Then, the metaphor will be expanded to suggest that preference in concurrent chains measures an analog to gravitational mass. Some new data on the relation between resistance and preference will be presented to illustrate convergent measurement of a single construct or state variable corresponding to the strength, value, or mass of learning that results from a history of reinforcement in the presence of a distinctive stimulus. " Abstract from SQAB webpage [http://www.jsu.edu/depart/psychology/sebac/abstracts-1998.]. VHS 5655

(Parts summaries taken from the Psychological & Educational Films website [www.psychedfilms.com]. Part 1: "Perhaps the most complex and engaging of Carl Rogers' filmed demonstrations of Client Centered Therapy with a real client ... . Gloria's conflict between her feelings ("I want to"), her beliefs ("it's wrong"), and her actions ("but I'll do it anyway"), and her personal "utopia" when she is not in conflict, but "all in one piece," are all heard and understood by Rogers. The value of any system relies largely on the skill of the person who employs it, as Rogers so ably demonstrates. The video includes Rogers describing his system of psychotherapy and practice, his interview with the client, and his comments about the session.". Part 2: "With a goal similar to Rogers,' Frederick Perls uses an entirely different approach -- Gestalt Therapy. Perls frustrates Gloria into standing on her own two feet and abandoning her roles and games. He frustrates her into being real, into knowing and owning her feelings, and being in the here and now. The video includes Perls describing his system of psychotherapy and practice, his interview with the client, and his comments about the session.". Part 3: "Albert Ellis challenges Gloria's absolutes -- her "awfulizing," and "catastrophizing"-- that make her feel so unhappy with herself, and that sabotage her relationships with others. He tells her that the irrational things she says to herself cause her negative feelings and her consequent behaviors. Gloria begins to discover that she can correct her irrational thoughts and reverse her negative feelings and behaviors. The video includes Ellis describing his system of psychotherapy and practice, his interview with the client, and his comments about the session. In conclusion, Gloria and Shostrom discuss her experiences with the three therapists." VHS 6126
