One of the five programs in the series, Asia today, which explores the rapid development taking place across Asia. A general introduction of Malaysia and Singapore. Home of 18 million people, mostly Muslims, Malaysia is still about 60% jungle. The oral history traditions of its past are recalled in shadow puppet shows which antedate its colonization by Portugal, Holland, France, and Britain. Today Malaysia is an independent country, an unusual constitutional monarchy, with 9 royal families from which a different reigning sultan is selected every 5 years, and a democratic parliament. Singapore is an area of contradictions, an Asian melting pot that has pursued relentless Western style development. Australian documentary that looks at the Penan, a unique tribe of rainforest nomads living in Sarawak, Borneo, whose way of life is being destroyed by logging. Bruno Manser, a Swiss national, lives with the Penan and works to organize their resistance to the loggers and to publicize their plight to the outside world. Manser's work has brought him into conflict with the Malaysian government. VHS 4911

Bontoc eulogy [videorecording] / a film by Marlon Fuentes. New York, NY . 1995. 1 videocassette (56 min.) : sd., b&w ; 1/2 in. A personal and poignant docudrama that examines the Filipino experience at the 1904 St. Louis World's fair. The film focuses on the film maker's grandfather, an Igorot warrior, one of the 1,100 tribal natives displayed as anthropological "specimens" in the Philippine village exhibit. A unique fusion of rare archival images, verite, and carefully orchestrated visual sequences shot in the present, the film is an innovative investigation of history, memory and the spectacle of the "other" in the turn-of-the-century America. "Cannibal tours" [videorecording] / a film by Dennis O'Rourke. Los Angeles, Calif. 1987. 1 videocassette (77 min.) : sd., col. ; 1/2 in. Tourists travel on a cruise ship to visit the farthest reaches of Papua New Guinea. Australian Dennis O'Rourke takes an ironic look (which neither condones nor condemns the tourists or the Papua New Guineans) at tourist/native interaction and explores whether it is the indigenous tribespeople or the white visitors who are the cultural oddity. Both the tourists and the tribespeople comment on each other, highlighting both culture clash and the ways in which the two groups are alike, in this unusual documentary that explores the differences and the surprising similarities that emerge when Western and New Guinean people meet within the context of organized "travel adventure tours." This film is part of the series "A Question of Rights" that explores what governments, communities, NCOs and individuals are doing to ensure that women's reproductive rights are recognized in Ethiopia, Latvia, Jamaica and Fiji. This segment looks at Fiji which, since the armed coup in 1987, has become a cauldron of ethnic persecution and human rights abuses. Male authority in Pacific culture is so deeply entrenched that women have no power to say "no" to sexual exploitation. Prostitution is a taboo subject in Fiji and is illegal, but it is the women and not the men who get prosecuted. VHS 5512

This film chronicles the two seasons the Harvard-Peabody New Guinea Expedition spent with the Dugum Dani (Dani) in the Kurelu area of the Baliem Valley, Dutch New Guinea (now Irian Jaya, Indonesia). Its purpose was to record the Kurelu wars, rituals, and daily life, and show a people trapped in an avenge-reprisal system. The film portrays the stories of Weaklekek, a warrior, and Tukum, a tender of pigs, their enemies and their friends. Battles, mourning ceremonies and victory celebrations are depicted. Traditional dwellings, dress and battle regalia are also shown. VHS 2104
