Amartya Sen a life reexamined. (56 min.) Documentary on the life and work of Amartya Sen, the first South Asian to win the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economics. The film is centered around a conversation between Sen and economist Kaushik Basu, a student of Sen, and is interspersed with interviews of other experts as well as footage of places connected with Sen's life. DVD 1542.

Annapurna Mahila Mandal (Bombay). (12 min.) Describes a society of more than 5,000 who provide meals in their homes to migrant workers whose families remain in the country. The society was formed to obtain low-interest loans for the women who were previously charged interest of as much as 150% by the grocers or money-lenders for the food supplies. The major drawback of the arrangement for the women is the long hours with no days off. DVD 1925.

Aparåajito = The unvanquished. (111 min.) Follows the life of the poor Bengali country boy, Apu and his encounter with the school system in Benares and later with the intellectual life at the university in Calcutta. DVD 3752.

Ayurveda the art of being. (102 min.) Ayurveda, the "science of life", one of the oldest holistic medical systems in the world. Originating in India more than 5000 years ago, and spreading to Tibet, China and Japan, this uncanny intersection of science, medicine and magic is only now receiving serious study in the West. Balancing acts. (23 min.) In Pakistan, seventeen-year-old Hina is challenging tradition to complete her education. In Afghanistan, returning refugees like Maa Gul want the government to honor their right to shelter. In Kenya, Rose, who is HIV positive, is championing rights to independence for widows. Bichari Sita Sita, a girl from Jambu. (47 min.) Reveals how uneducated, rural Nepalese girls are tricked and lured into sexual slavery. Focusing on one girl's journey into the brothels of Mumbai, the film is an adaptation of a street play performed by rural Nepalese girls, whose performance is also featured in the film. This innovative blend of documentary and fiction both expands our notion of cinematic genre and extends the broader social message that people can make a difference in their communities. DVD 831.

Bombay. (130 min.) "Based on true incidents. Personifies Hindu-Muslim racial tensions ... starts out a love story, a romance between a south Indian Hindu man and a Muslim woman ... taboo in the small village they hail from. They marry against family wishes and move to Bombay ... The rest of the film is set in the December 1992-January 1993 period when the "Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid" controversy had raised racial tensions in Bombay (and other parts of India) and sparked riots and violence. The family is separated from the children and fathers of both parents are killed ... Born into brothels. (83 min.) Two documentary filmmakers chronicle their time in Sonagchi, Calcutta and the relationships they developed with children of prostitutes who work the city's notorious red light district. While living in the red light district of Calcutta, documenting life in the brothels, New York-based photographer Zana Briski embarked on a project by which she gave cameras to the children of prostitutes and taught them photography, awakening within them hidden talent and creativity and giving them a means to transform their lives. The British empire in color. (147 min.) This fascinating documentary uses rare color film to examine the complexities, contradictions and legacies of the British Empire, from the Partition of India to the handover of Hong Kong and more. DVD 4246.

City of joy. (ca. 135 min.) An American doctor, a British nurse and an illiterate Indian farmer join together to transform a Calcutta ghetto when it is threatened by the brutal local "godfather." DVD 1425.

Der Tiger von Eschnapur = The tiger of Eschnapur. (101 min.) Western architect Harald Berger (Paul Hubschmid), called to India by Chandra, the Maharajah of Eschnapur, falls in love with the beautiful temple dancer Seetha (Debra Paget), although she is promiosed to the Maharajah. Their betrayal ignites the wrath of a vengeful Chandra, who is fighting his own battle for power with his scheming brother, and the lovers are forced to flee into the desert. DVD 2923.

English, August. (102 min.) Irreverent story of a watershed year in the life of a young and reluctant civil servant dispatched to Madna, the hottest small town in India. DVD 1471.

Everest. (45 min.) Filmed during the infamous 1996 storm that claimed eight lives, Everest documents the filmmakers' harrowing rescue efforts to help the surviving members of the ill-fated group. The international team of climbers scale the world's tallest peak in this daring adventure of triumph and tragedy. Fire. (108 min.) Banned in India, this film was the first to confront lesbianism in that country. Radha Kapur (Azmi) is in a barren, arranged marriage to an amateur swami who seeks enlightenment through celibacy. Her life takes an irresistible turn when Mundu (Chowdhry), her beautiful young sister-in-law, seeks to free herself from the confines of her own loveless marriage and they find solace and love in each other's arms. Forest of bliss. (ca. 90 min.) A documentary on the Holy City of Benares, India. The daily customs and religious rituals. DVD 984.

Fritz Lang's Indian epic. (203 min.) In the Tiger of Eschnapur, "architect Harold Berger, called to India by Chandra, the Maharajah of Eschnapur, falls in love with the beautiful temple dancer Seetha, although she is promised to the Maharajah. Their betrayal ignites the wrath of a vengeful Chandra ... and the lovers are forced to flee into the desert."--Container. Gandhi. (191 min.) Follows the life of Mahatma Gandhi from his days as a lawyer in South Africa to his role as India's spiritual leader by using his philosophy of non-violent but direct-action protest that helped end British rule. Centers on the extraordinary man who fought for a nonviolent, peaceful existence and set an entire nation free. DVD 325.

Ganges. (150 min.) A sumptuous series that tells the story of the most extraordingary river in the world. The Ganges runs through the heart of India. For millions of Hindus it is India's sacred river, but they share its banks with a rich variety of wildlife. DVD 4887.

Gulabi Aaina = The Pink mirror. (40 min.) A colorful funny look into the Indian homosexual closet, this film pits two Indian drag queens against a westernized gay teenager in a battle to woo a handsome hunk. Underneath the humorous exterior, the film is an exploration of the Indian gay landscape and understanding of the deep, humanly tender bondings that exist between drag queens who form unique non-patriarchal families. Gunga Din. (117 min.) Adventure story of three English soldier comrades battling the savage punjabs in India, and their lowly water-bearer, Gunga Din, who longs to be a soldier. DVD 1787.

Harsh beauty a documentary. (54 min.) Existing as they have for centuries, the Eunuchs (or "Hijra") are considered the third gender, neither men nor women. The film follows the lives of Jyothi, Usha and Hira Bai, three Eunuchs who live openly as women. They want to be accepted for what they truly believe themselves to be. DVD 2635.

Hey! Ram. (199 min.) A glimpse of the tumultuous moments of Indian history. The story begins at the bedside of Saket Ram, 89 years old Saket Ram is trying to die as gracefully as possible. Astride waves of nostalgia and his memories, the story goes back to the 1940`s. Saket Ram (Kamal Haasan)and his close associate and friend Amjad Ali Khan (Shahrukh Khan) are archeologists working under Mortimer Wheeler at the excavation sites of Mohenjodardo. Saket Ram and Amjad do not see the need for such division of India, Gandhiji never did like this division to accommodate an Islamic state. He wanted to accommodate all within one country as brothers and equals. DVD 226.

Highway courtesans. (71 min.) Filmed in Central India from 1995 to 2004 where the eldest daughters in the Bachara community work as highway prostitutes to support their families. DVD 2061.

Holy smoke! (114 min.) A cult deprogrammer is hired to free a young woman who has fallen under the influence of a religious guru while on a journey in India. DVD 3884.

How to save the world one man, one cow, one planet. (104 min.) "Exposes globalization and its mantra of infinite growth in a finite world for what it really is: an environmental and human disaster. But across India, farmers are fighting back. Lagaan once upon a time in India. (225 min.) Set in Queen Victoria's India, this is a story about a battle without bloodshed fought by a group of unlikely hereos. Will a game of cricket stop three years of lagaan (tax) for the Indian people? DVD 312.

Mahabharat volume 16 , episodes 91-94. Mahabharat is an Indian television serial that tells the story of the descendants of King Bharata, two families who lived in northern India, perhaps about 1200 B.C. The Pandava brothers lose their kingdom to their Kaurava cousins and engage in a mighty struggle to win it back. Many lives are lost in the conflict. The story illustrates the futility of war. Some of the heroes are taken from history, and some represent human ideals and gods. DVD 636.

Man push cart. (87 min.) Every night while the city sleeps, Ahmad, a former rock star in his native Pakistan, drags his heavy cart along the streets of New York. Every morning, he sells coffee and donuts to a city he cannot call his own. One day the pattern of this harsh existence is broken by a glimmer of hope for a better life. DVD 2762.

Mission Kashmir. (160 min.) In a strife torn valley of Kashmir, Altaff (Roshan), an orphan of war is adopted by a policeman (Dutt). One day Altaff discovers a shocking truth that converts him into a warrior and he becomes a famed guerilla fighter. The fate of Kashmir depends on a final, ferocious encounter -- Mission Kashmir. Mughal-e-Azam Mughale azama. (185 min.) A dramatic spectacular set in the time of the emperor Akbar, at the height of the Moghul power and splendor. The story revolves around a love attachment, doomed for disaster, between heir apparent Prince Salim and a palace slave. This renowned Indian epic, made over a span of 15 years utilized 14 cameras operating simultaneously, with a cast of thousands, horses, camels and elephants, with period costumes and settings. DVD 3756.

My daughter the terrorist. (58 min.) "A rare, inside look at an organization that most of the world has blacklisted as a terrorist group. Made by the first foreign film crew to be given access to the Tamil Tigers (LTTE) of Sri Lanka. Dharsika and Puhalchudar have been living and fighting side-by-side for seven years as part of LTTE's elite force, the Black Tigers. Their story is told through cinema verité footage, newsreel footage, and interviews with the women and Dharsika's mother. The women describe heartbreaking traumas they both experienced at the hands of the Sri Lankan army, which led them to join the guerrilla forces. This documentary sheds light on the reasons that the Tamil Tigers continue their bloody struggle for independence while questioning their tactics"--Distributor. DVD 5452.

Naina Jogin. (59 min.) "In Madhubani, people struggle against trying circumstances to eke out a living. Many have taken to painting to survive. They paint the traditional motives (erstwhile painted on cow dung textured walls of huts and closely associated with ritual ) unto paper. These paintings are then sold in markets in India and abroad. While many painters repeat certain traditional motives other artists boldly expand the scope to include contemporary themes. Nalini by day, Nancy by night a film. (ca. 27 min.) A documentary about the outsourcing of American jobs to India. From the perspective of an Indian immigrant living in the United States, using humor and satire to capture the lives of Indian telemarketers who undergo voice and accent training to speak to US customers with an American accent. A complex look at life as per Eastern Standard Time in India. DVD 2227.

Pathera påaïncåalåi = Song of the little road. (126 min.) A poor Bengali family survives in a village but wider horizons tempt the father. The protection of family members' reputations, the relationship of the family group to an elderly 'aunt', and first confrontations with death contribute to the early development of the boy Apu. His father's dreams prevail over the objections of his mother so that at the end of the film the family moves to the big city of Benares. Apu's experiences are followed in the second film of the trilogy: Aparajito" and his growth to early manhood in the final film "Apur Sansar.” DVD 3751.

Phantom India. (363 min.) "Louis Malle called his gorgeous and ground breaking Phantom India the most personal film of his career. And this extraordinary journey to India, originally shown as a miniseries on European television, is infused with his sense of discovery, as well as occasional outrage, intrigue, and joy." -- container. Prapancha pash = A throw of dice. (74 min.) Inspired by the gambling episode in the ancient Hindu epic the Mahabharata, this rare classic of silent cinema tells of two kings who share a passion for reckless gambling, and for the same woman. A throw of dice is the third film in a pioneering trilogy of silent films made through a unique partnership between German director Franz Osten and Indian actor-producer Himansu Rai. DVD 4583.

Pratidandi = The adversary. (110 min.) Siddartha, a medical student, feels he must discontinue his studies following the death of his father. He looks for a job and has to submit to a formal interviews requiring that the candidate be examined by a committee on questions of general culture. He realizes that he lacks the all important element of backing. Somewhat mentally disoriented, wandering in a Calcutta shocked by intense political upheaval and revolutionary violence, he ends by accepting a medical sales position, away from the city and the girl he loves. DVD 3497.

The price of youth. (10 min.) Examines the explosion in systematic tafficking of young girls and women from Nepal to work as prostitutes in neighboring Bombay, India. Looks at grassroots efforts to combat their forced prostitution and to rehabilitate these young victims. VHS 7559.

Rang de basanti. (171 min.) This is the story about the youth of India today. A young London based film-maker comes upon the diaries of her grandfather, who served in the British police force in India during the freedom struggle. She plans to shoot a film based on the diaries and casts a group of friends to play the roles of the revolutionaries described in the diaries. The friends cannot identify with the characters and would rather enjoy today's life than get involved in a project the seems like stuff of textbooks. DVD 3140.

Return of the Taliban. (60 min.) " ... the lawless Pakistani tribal areas along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border ... reveals how the area has fallen under the control of a resurgent Taliban militia ... a launching pad for attacks on U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan ... the Taliban has claimed ... North and South Waziristan as Taliban republics ... off limits to U.S. troops ... Frontline investigates a secret front in the war on terror."--Container. DVD 3151.

The River. (99 min.) The film eloquently contrasts the growing pains of three young women with the immutability of the holy Bengal River in India, around which their daily lives unfold. DVD 1183.

Robert A.F. Thurman on Buddhism. (220 min.) Discusses the Buddha in the world, and the difficulties and methods of becoming one; the four noble truths, the 3 wheels of Dharma, the 3 vehicles, and the metaphor of the turning of the wheel of Dharma; and the Sangha, or community of those who try to live according to the Dharma. Salaam Bombay! (116 min.) Krisha, a ten year old boy, has been abandoned in Bombay by his mother. He tries to earn money to go home while he lives in the streets. DVD 4789.

Satya. (171 min.) "Satya is the story of truth as it is perceived by different eyes, where only shadow lines demarcate the good actions from the bad... and only the happiness and pain that follow are a reality"--Container. DVD 224.

The selling of innocents. (ca. 50 min.) Documentary on the young girls in the sex traffic industry in India. DVD 788.

Shatranj ke khiladi = The chess players. (115 min.) This drama about colonialism and indigenous culture is set in 1856 at the court of Wajid Ali Shah in Lucknow, the capital of Oudh. Features two parallel narratives. The first shows rich landowners Meer and Mirza pour every ounce of passion into a never-ending game of chess. Without thinking of their responsibilities to their families and the political uprising in the kingdom, the two men just keep playing. The second narrative dramatises the conflict between Wajid Ali Shah and General James Outram who represents Lord Dalhousie's treacherously implemented annexation policies. Wajid Ali is shown as a politically weak figure who surrenders to the British without a fight. DVD 3496.

Short cut to Nirvana Kumbha Mela. (1 hr., 25 min.) Documents the Kumbha Mela festival, attended by 70 million people, in Allahabad, India, during January, 2001. DVD 1678.

The young filmmaker's competition for Sikh Youth is designed to encourage and inspire our youth to get involved in media and film and use their creativity to produce interesting and educational pieces designed to spread the spirit of Sikhi. Slum futures. (23 min.) This program visits the slums of Bombay, now known as Mumbai. Mumbai is India's financial capital, but the city has massive, sprawling slums, where eight out of the 12 million residents live. Examines the reality of living in the slums and the various projects attempting to rehabilitate Mumbai's slums. This program is part of a 27 part series that explores global efforts to achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals for halving poverty by 2015. DVD 1698.

The soul of India. (82 min.) A personal documentary resulting from the author's spending 4 months in India. Examines the increasing violence between Hindus and Muslims, the rise of Hindu fundamentalism, and the crumbling of India's pluralistic society. DVD 1508.

When eight-year-old Chuyia is widowed, she is sent to a home in the Holy City of Varanasi where Hindu widows live in penitence. Her feisty presence affects the other residents, forcing each to confront their faith and society's prejudices, especially a young woman who has fallen in love with a follower of Gandhi. DVD 3498.
