Biomagnetism [videorecording].  Falls Church, Va. Landmark Media, Inc., c1996.  The nature of healing. Part 5. Magnetic equipment is used in every major hospital around the world. This video introduces viewers to magnetic resonance imaging and other high-tech practices. Magnetic therapy is available as a non-intrusive, safe treatment for a range of conditions. This practice has not been entirely embraced by the medical community, but these therapies are widely used in the treatment of race horses and other livestock.  VHS 4655

The heart of the matter [videorecording].  New York : First Run/Icarus Films, 1994.  Documentary on women afflicted with AIDS. Focuses on the life and death of Janice Jirau, an African American woman, who was infected with the virus by her husband. Following his death and her diagnosis with the HIV virus, she became politically active and publicly sought to challenge the mythology of the disease. Interviews with other HIV-positive women underscore the universal nature of the problems Janice confronted and draws attention to the alarming growth of this epidemic among women.  VHS 4633

People could be well in the morning and dead by nightfall. This tape introduces the viewer to a comprehensive program to Help the expectant woman take care of herself and her baby. Features a question-and-answer session with childbirth authorities and also includes a postnatal section for the first six weeks after delivery.   VHS 5339

Kids under the influence [videorecording].  Princeton, NJ : Films for the Humanities, c1989.  This "For Kid's Sake" documentary looks at our number one drug problem among kids -- alocohol. It examines school problems and run-ins with the law as well as the long-term physical and psychological disorders caused by alcohol consumption and demonstrates the enormous influence of peer pressure and the seductive advertisements in the mass media. Visiting alcoholism treatment centers, it shows the devastating damage done by alcohol and the wrenching process of rehabilitation; explains why alcohol presents increased health and safety risks for children and adolescents; and clarifies why alcohol is so easily abused by youngsters, and what can be done about it.  VHS 4046

Lifeline [videorecording] : preventing elder abuse / with Betty White.  [Sacramento?] : California Attorney General's Office, 1992.  Counselors, law enforcement officers, medical personnel, psychiatrists, and social service workers discuss the varieties of abuse (physical, psychological, financial as well as neglect or abandonment) that affect an estimated one in twenty elderly Americans. All adults are encouraged to watch for signs of abuse, know how to report it, and be able to evaluate long-term facilities and set up support networks for caretakers. Most elder abuse occurs in private homes.  VHS 2114

Originating in the Orient, this therapy is currently practiced throughout the world. In this segment, Dr. Serene Lim demonstrates how such conditions as backache, tennis elbow, arthritis, breathing disorders, pinched nerves, sciatica, swayback and stress-related disorders can all be treated with movement therapies using the Alexander Technique developed in the late 19th century by Matthais Alexander, an Australian Shakespearean actor. Film explains that the main objective of the Alexander Technique is to maintain the poise of the head on the top of the lengthening spine in movement and at rest.  VHS 4653

Period piece [videorecording].  Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J. : Jay Rosenblatt Film Library [distributor], 1996.  Women of various ages (8-84) and ethnicities share how they felt when their menstrual cycles first started. Old educational films are revisited in new ways to show humorous and historical views of this rite of passage. This film explores the general discomfort around the subject of menstruation and the pain girls experience as they negotiate relationships with their bodies and their culture.   VHS 4263

Plagued [videorecording].  New York : Filmakers Library, 1992. The series investigates the relationships between disease, epidemics, medical science, history and the environment. Pt.1 uses various case studies to show how epidemics break out; it also covers environmental ailments such as carpal tunnel syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder, and heart disease. Pt. 2 concentrates on bubonic plague (Black Death) and cholera, giving an historical account of the spread of these diseases as man explored his world. Pt. 3 explores the relationship between the immune system and history. Pt. 4 shows the interaction between the epidemics of HIV and syphilis, fostered by drug use and prostitution. VHS 3750

The politics of tobacco [videorecording] / ABC News.  Oak Forest, Ill. : MPI Home Video, c1994.  The program is divided into three segments. In the first part, Ms. Roberts interviews Congressmen who support or oppose the tobacco lobby and shows news footage of the declining influence of the tobacco industry due to recent attacks on it. In part 2 she travels to Harrison County, Ky., where Congressman Scotty Baesler and tobacco farmers discuss the economic changes in that area in recent years due to changes in the tobacco industry and in government policies regarding it. In part 3 Norman Ornstein discusses the political and economic impact of using tobacco taxes as one of the three main sources of finance for the proposed national health care system. Teach the children [videorecording].  San Francisco, CA : California Newsreel, c1992.  On television.  Edwin Newman explores the impact of extensive television viewing on young children through interviews with educators, psychologists, media analysts, mental health researchers, children, and interested adults.  VHS 1814

To hurt and to heal [videorecording].  Berkeley, CA : University of California, Extension Media Center, 1986.  Explores the ethical dilemmas in neonatal and pediatric medicine faced by health care professionals and the emotional process experienced by the parents of critically ill infants. Part 1. Conversations with the parents of Jean-Andre who was born at 27 weeks gestation and survived for six diffficult weeks. They describe in detail their child's struggle to live, his doctor's extensive efforts, and the many conflicts faced by everyone involved in the battle for his life. Part 2. The experiences of two families: In one family a child born with complex cardiac anomolies is cured by immediate, semi-experimental surgery; In the other family a child born at 27 weeks now has bronchial pulmonary dysplasia and is at home. He has a tracheostomy, is completely oxygen-dependent and requires 24-hour care. In the intensive care units the nurses discuss decision-making in the medical hierarchy, describe their frustration with clinical responsibilities that are not matched with authority and relate the agonizing dilemma of bringing pain to children who may not heal. The doctors reveal their vulnerability in the face of profound ethical and clinical dilemmas that elude clear right or wrong answers--modern medicine requires them to grapple with the conflict between technological possibilities and human needs and emotions.
