She is invited to compete in another contest and she chooses the topic "My hometown during the Third Reich" -- which according to lore didn't collaborate with the Nazis. However, the local archives produce contradictory evidence and she is denied access to local newspaper files. She quickly becomes the object of scorn and threats from the townspeople who have a surprising lot to conceal. VHS 1847

Christa (Engel) is a young mother who, distraught that she cannot pay the rent on the children's day care center she Helps operate, robs a bank with the assistance of Werner (Muller-Westernhagen) and another friend who is soon captured by the police. Christa tries to persuade a priest to pretend the money is a donation from the church to the day care center but he will not cooperate. Meanwhile not only are the police looking for them but a hostage from the bank robbery is obsessed with finding Christa. Then they are identified and go into hiding with Ingrid (Rieze), a friend of Christa. Werner runs from the police when he is caught trying to steal a car and is killed. Christa flees to Portugal and Ingrid joins her. They have a love affair and are forced to return to Germany where Christa is arrested by the police. VHS 5432

A psychological thriller set in New York and Hamburg, Germany, that makes a statement about American gangster films and the Americanization of European cinema and lifestyles. Wender's film tells of the encounter between an American con artist and a German craftsman. Hamburg picture framer Jonathan (Ganz) is an ordinary man who believes he is suffering from a rare and fatal blood disease. One of the early sound masterpieces of German cinema. A middle-aged, tyrannical professor named Rath (Jannings) is led to his destruction through his infatuation with a heartless cafe singer named Lola Lola (Dietrich). Rath marries Lola-Lola (thereby losing his school position) and is increasingly degraded by her until he is completely humiliated as an abused stage clown. When Lola leaves him for another man, he returns to his school a broken old man and dies at his desk. This film made Dietrich an overnight star. VHS 10

Chicago, Ill. 1988. 1 videocassette (62 min.) : sd., b&w. ; 1/2 in. This anti-Semitic propaganda film, produced in Nazi Germany in 1938, was designed to prejudice contemporary German viewers against Jews. The film uses archival footage and clips from newsreels and other sources, including scenes from the Lód´z ghetto in occupied Poland, to portray Jews as swindlers and parasites. VHS 4019

Considered a fine example of the then new medium of sound filmmaking, the production incorporates beautiful art direction, editing, costuming, a droll script, and finely directed performances. Christel Weinzinger (Harvey) is an ambitious glove seamstress who sees the potential for financial and romantic opportunity the Congress provides and subsequently creates havoc in her efforts to make contact with nobility. She throws a bouquet of flowers with her address into the parade of dignitaries entering the city. When the Tsar of Russia visits her, they fall in love. VHS 6011

This is a provocative and powerful film interweaving drama with documentary to profile famed Austrian anthropologist Rudolf Pöch. A major figure in the history of 20th-century European anthropology, Pöch did field work in New Guinea and the Kalahari, and during World War I, did research in POW camps studying the physical attributes of Russian prisoners. He used these studies to substantiate his theories on racial purity and superiority later used by the Nazis. The program poses a variety of questions central to the very nature of anthropology, its uses and misuses. VHS 3586

Title is a spoof on a phrase, "the all-around realized Socialist personality," heard often on East German radio. Set in the divided city of Berlin, film explores the life of Edda (Sander), a free-lance photojournalist who is commissioned to photograph and present Berlin from a women's lib perspective. While really wanting to make socially significant pictures, she must work at the more mundane jobs to support herself and her daughter. Film looks at her struggles to realize herself as an artist and as a woman straddling multiple worlds - work, womanhood, motherhood, East, West, capitalism and socialism. VHS 5435

Equipped with full intellect right from his birth he decides at his third birthday not to grow up as he views the insane world around him as the Nazis come to power. Oskar has two weapons to see him through the ordeal of modern history: his tin drum, which he bangs to drown out horror and hypocrisy, and his childish voice raised in a shriek piercing enough to break glass. He uses both to protest against the middle-class mentality of his family and neighborhood, which symbolize all passive people in Nazi Germany at that time. VHS 4682 and DVD 40

Dr. Mabuse, the mastermind of crime, uses hypnosis to subvert his opponents and control his victims. His thirst for power and wealth reflect the decadence of post World War I German society. Master of many disguises, Mabuse uses his evil powers to enmesh his victims to further his scheme to be the lord of the underworld. His adversary, Police Commissioner von Wenk is the only man who can stop him. Filmmaker Lang's high-contrast expressionist graphics, overly-bright streetlights and bit-characters with significant mannerisms provide social commentary that raise this film above the limitations of the genre. Mother Krause begs unsuccessfully to replace the money. Max leaves Erna after the roomer claims to have slept with her. Paul and the roomer commit a burglary but the roomer is caught. Paul confesses to his mother before he too is arrested. Mother Krause turns on the gas tap in the kitchen and kills herself and the roomer's child. Erna and Max reunite and discover the bodies.
