Set in Havana at the end of the 18th century, a guilt-ridden count invites twelve of his plantation slaves to a "last supper" during which he attempts to teach them what he sees as the crucial elements of Christianity, namely, submissive obedience to their master and joy in suffering. A portrayal of the political and religious conflict between adulterous King Henry VIII who wishes to divorce his wife Catherine, and his Chancellor, Sir Thomas More, who refuses to support such a plan. When More cannot be swayed, Henry demands the clergy renounce the Pope and name him the head of the church in England. In the Garden of Gethsemane near the Mount of Olives, Jesus is betrayed by Judas Iscariot. Jesus is condemned to death for blasphemy and brought before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea, for sentencing. The roaring crowd demands his death, so Pilate orders his crucifixion.
