This guide lists internet sites for doing research on the sources of economics. Other sources can be found by searching the Aladin Catalog for books and the Aladin databases for journal articles. If you need more help in finding information, please contact a reference librarian.

  • American Economic Association - The AEA encourages economic research, especially the historical and statistical study of the actual conditions of industrial life and issues publications on economic subjects.
  • Bureau of Economic Analysis Regional Facts (BEARFACTS) - "...consists of computer-generated narratives for States and counties. The narratives describe an area's personal income using current estimates, growth rates, and a breakdown of the sources of personal income."
  • Bureau of Labor Statistics Economy at a Glance - The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is the principal fact-finding agency for the Federal Government in the broad field of labor economics and statistics.
  • County Business Patterns - This database provides county, state, and national level business data for 1988 to the most recent year available..
  • The Dismal Scientist - Real-time analysis of major economic events around the globe.
  • EcEdWeb - The Economic Education Website (EcEdWeb) was created by the Center for Economic Education at the University of Nebraska, Omaha. The aim of the site is to provide support for economic education from K-12 through college.
  • Economic Freedom of the World
  • Economic Growth Resources - A resource for researchers studying economic growth
  • The Economic Literacy Project - The Economic Literacy Project, from the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, aims to educate Americans about their need to understand economics, basic knowledge that FRB Minneapolis believes many Americans lack.
  • Economic Report of the President - Reports from 1995 to the current year.

  • Fed in Print - An Index to Federal Reserve Economic Research.
  • Federal Reserve Banks- List of the 12 Federal Reserve Banks.
  • FINWeb - Provides a variety of sites and links to resources related to economics and financial information.
  • Forum on Economic Freedom - The Forum on Economic Freedom web site was developed by the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) to build and strengthen democracy around the world through promoting private enterprise.
  • FreeLunch.com - "Economy.com's FreeLunch provides you with FREE access to over 1,000,000 economic and financial data series."
  • InfoSurf: Economics - Hosted by UCSB.
  • Inomics - Inomics offers the economist a single stop on the Internet to find most of the information needed for the profession.
  • Internet Economist - A self-guided tutorial which offers a very basic lesson in Helping economists develop Internet information skills.
  • Liber8 - Research Library of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.
  • Monthly Consumer Price Indexes - From the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.
  • National Bureau of Economic Research - Founded in 1920, the National Bureau of Economic Research is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of how the economy works. The NBER is committed to undertaking and disseminating unbiased economic research among public policymakers, business professionals, and the academic community.

  • The On-line Books Page - A list of full-text online books in the Economics, Trade, Transportation and Communication subject areas.
  • Online Glossary for Research Economics - A searchable glossary of research economics terms.

  • Economic and Monetary Unions of the Past
  • EH.Net - EH.Net operates the Economic History Services fileserver and several electronic discussion lists to provide resources and promote communication among scholars in economic history and related fields.
  • History of Economic Thought - Consists of short biographical sketches and bibliographies of more than 300 economists from the 17th century to the present as well as surveys on value theory, capital theory, growth theory, monetary theory, and business cycle theory.
  • History of Economic Thought - McMaster University Archive. The History of Thought Archive represents an attempt to gather all material for the study of the history of economics at one site. This includes both primary texts, studies of those texts and of their authors.

  • Economic Policy Institute - Current statistics, analysis and commentary including information on the GDP (gross domestic product), personal incomes, CPI (consumer price index), federal budget and interest rates.
  • Economic Statistics Briefing Room - The purpose of this service is to provide easy access to current Federal economic indicators.
  • EH.net - EH.Net provides an on-line location for researchers in economic history to make their data series available to other professionals and interested scholars.

  • The Inflation Calculator - Calculates inflation rates from 1800-1999
  • Macroeconomic Time Series Data Source Locator - from the University of Chicago
  • National Center for Charitable Statistics - The National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS) is the national repository of data on the nonprofit sector in the United States.
  • The New Economy Index - A new set of of economic indicators gathered from existing private and public data.
  • Official Statistics on the Web - Provided by the University of Auckland Library
  • Panel Study of Income Dynamics -The Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) is an ongoing longitudinal survey of 8,700 core households designed to illuminate the economic behavior of individuals in relation to their families as a whole.
  • REIS - Regional Economic Information System - The REIS database provides local area economic data for states, counties, and metropolitan areas for 1969-1998. Statistics in the data base include: personal income and earning variables, full and part employment variables, transfer payments variables, and farm income and expenses variables.
  • Social Sciences Data Center (UCSD) - A collection of links to various data sources for the social sciences including economics, politics, demographics and international information from the World Bank.
  • Ted Bos's Economic Time Series Page - An excellent compilation of Fed Economic Time Series Data from various sources. All the data is easily searchable or browsable.
  • U.S. Economic Indicators - This site provides information about international trade, retail sales, housing, durable goods and manufacturing.
