Electronic Classroom/Computer Lab
Media
Services operates the Electronic Classroom/Computer
Lab located on the lower level of the Library.
The room is designed to serve two functions. Its
priority use is as a classroom for library instruction
incorporating computing technology. It is not
available for nonlibrary-oriented instruction.
It is also a computer lab for American University
students, staff, and faculty. The lab is available
on a first-come, first-served basis when it is
not scheduled for classroom use. The lab is open 24/5 - the same hours as the Library. Each Monday the
week's schedule of classes is posted outside the classroom
door.
The
Library also administers the Anderson
Computing Complex.

The
Electronic Classroom/Computer Lab contains
13 Windows XP computers connected to the campus EagleNet network. All
the computers are networked to a central laser
printer located in the front of the classroom.
Printing is done with EagleBuck$ and costs 10 cents per side.
For
more information about computing at AU, refer
to the student
technology guide published by OIT.

Computer
Lab Policies
Electronic
Classroom/Computer Lab Guidelines
|
No
food is permitted in the room. Any
drinks must be contained in spill-proof
containers. This policy protects the
equipment from spills which could
disable machines |
|
Computer
equipment and software security in
the classroom is maintained by the
Library Systems staff. Each computer
has access to EagleNet, Internet Explorer,
and ALADIN. Users are not permitted
to load any software onto the computers.
Users who are discovered attempting
to circumvent the security software
will be prohibited from future lab
use.
The
Library will attempt to keep locally-loaded
software as current as possible within
budgetary constraints. Users are not
permitted to load software on lab
computers.
The
Library is not responsible for loss
of data due to viruses, computer malfunctions,
or any other cause. |
|
Documents
should be saved on flash drives and
not on the local hard drive. Documents
may be saved on the user's network
G: drive. Documents saved to the hard
drive will be deleted. |
|
Media
Services staff will assist users in
troubleshooting the operation of the
computers. Their responsibilities
are limited primarily to assisting
in starting the computers, logging
in, and printing problems. They are
not responsible for teaching the use
of the applications available on each
computer.
The Office_of_Information_Technology offers a wide selection of training on how to use software applications,
the my.american.edu portal and other
network resources (AU ID login required).
The
library catalog, ALADIN,
also contains a number of electronic
books on various software applications.
Search in ALADIN or go to "Electronic Books".
These resources are available only
for members of the AU community. For
assistance in accessing these materials
contact the Reference Desk at 202.885.3238
or
. |
|
Only
American University students, staff,
and faculty are permitted to use the
computer lab. A valid AU ID may be
requested for verification. |
|
In
order to provide as many students
as possible with computer access,
each student must respect the needs
of other students. Projects undertaken
for profit or income from a non-university
third party are prohibited. |
|
AU
webmail through my.american.edu is the only electronic mail system
supported in the lab.
Other
internet based email accounts (Yahoo,
Hotmail, etc.) may be used in the
lab, but lab assistants will not troubleshoot
problems with these systems. |
|
A
separate workstation is dedicated
for print jobs. Users are charged
for every sheet printed. If a file
is sent to be printed and it doesn't
print out, the user should ask for
assistance from a Media Services staff
member before trying to print the
file again. There are no discounts
if one uses his/her own paper.
EagleBuck$ are used in the computer lab, at the
copiers in the library, at the microform
reader/printers and at the ALADIN
printers. The cost of printing in
the lab is 10 cents per side.
AU
patrons can add money to their EagleBuck$
account at the Card Management Center
directly outside the Copy Center,
at any of the EagleBuck$ locations
on campus or through my.american.edu.
Non-AU patrons may purchase a generic
print card at the card dispenser located
in front of the Copy Center. The initial
cost of the card is $1.00. These cards
are reusable and value can be added
at the Card Management Centers around
campus.
Print
jobs can also be sent to a color
printer and retreived at the color
copier/printer in front of the Copy
Center. Color printing is paid for
with EagleBuck$ and costs $1.00 per page.
All
unclaimed printouts are discarded
after 24 hours. |
|
When
not scheduled for class use, the lab
is open the same hours as building hours for the Library. |
|
At
times when all of the computers are
in use and others are waiting to use
them, a waiting list is available
to hold one's place in line. When
others are waiting, there is a two-hour
limit for computer use. |
|
Lab
users are expected to be courteous
to fellow users and to all staff in
the Library with whom they interact.
Abusive behavior toward other students
or staff may result in suspension
of privileges. |
