Using DVDs in class can actually be more cumbersome than using VHS tapes. If you want to show just a clip or two, scanning through a disc with the fastforward or chapter controls takes up valuable classtime. With a VHS tape you could cue up the tape ahead of time to the scene you want and then just play the tape from that point.
There is a solution. If you are playing DVDs from your laptop, you can set up disc bookmarks. Set a bookmark at the start of a scene, then the next time you put the disc in your laptop you can jump directly to that scene.
Bookmarks can not be transferred to a component DVD player so you will have to use your laptop. For information about connecting your laptop to a classroom projector, consult with Audio-Visual Services.
DVD bookmarks are fairly straight forward on a Mac and can be used with Mac DVD Player which is the default player. With Windows machines, the options are a little more complicated. The version of PowerDVD which commonly ships with Dell laptops does not support DVD bookmarks. Neither does Windows Media Player. There are several players which cost $50 - $80 that do bookmarks, but there is also a freeware alternative. Media Player Classic is a free media player with a "favorites" function that is equivalent to bookmarks.
One important difference to keep in mind is that on a Mac, the bookmarks are linked to the specific disc. Even if you have made bookmarks for several different movies when you put a disc in your laptop, only the bookmarks for that movie will be shown. On a Windows laptop, Media Player Classic lists all the bookmarks you've made like a web browser bookmark list. Remember to label them so you know which go with which movie.
