Borrowing

Media Borrowing Policy
With the exception of the Home Use Collection described below, the majority of the DVDs, videotapes, videodiscs, and audiotapes in the Media Services collection are primarily used to support curriculum needs. Therefore only AU faculty and their proxies are permitted to check these materials out of the library. They go out on two-day loan unless an exception has been granted. Students and other users may borrow any of these materials for use within the Media Services department.

Fines for overdue items are charged for Media Services materials, just as they are for other library materials. Fines on daily checkouts are $1.20 per day; fines on hourly checkouts are $0.50 per hour.

Faculty may renew materials either by bringing them to the Media Services desk or by calling the desk at (202) 885-3250.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute instructors may take certain titles out of Media Services for class use. This is restricted to low use and easily replaceable titles and requires the prior approval of a Media Services supervisor.

Home Use Policy
Approximately 2500 of the feature films in the collection have been cataloged for home use and may be circulated to AU students and staff on a two day loan. Some feature film titles acquired specifically for class use are not designated for home use. Titles reserved at any time during the semester for class use and other high use items will not be circulated for home use; these items may only be viewed in Media Services. How to find Home Use titles.

Borrowing from other WRLC libraries
WRLC member libraries have a joint agreement to lend videos (with restrictions) to other member libraries for the express purpose of classroom use. Videos will not be borrowed/loaned on student request, however students are welcome to visit other WRLC libraries to view videos.

Request a video from outside the WRLC
AU Library and a small number of other libraries borrow/lend videos through interlibrary loan. If we don't have a title you are looking for, there may be a library willing to send it through an interlibrary loan request (requires login). Media Services only sends out titles that are not commonly used for instruction and are easily replaced. Videos from other WRLC consortium schools are not available to AU students through ILL. AU students are welcome to view these at the consortium schools. AU faculty can request consortium videos through Mediashare.
