More than 814 individuals renewed or initiated new Friends memberships in FY2006. Many from this group joined the library to celebrate the library’s attainment of its millionth volume in November. The one millionth volume, a first edition of John Locke’s Some thoughts concerning education (1693); and its million and first volume, a first edition of Mary Wollstonecraft’s On the vindication of the rights of woman (1792), were presented at a celebration held Wednesday, November 2, 2005. Pat Wand credited Friends not only with supplying supplemental funds to finance the additional purchases of materials, but also with helping to advocate for an increase in the book budget. The volumes were donated to the library by Friends.
Additionally, Friends hosted and co-hosted eight events including a spring 2005 tour of the Hillwood Museum, Marjorie Merriweather Post's estate and gardens, and the Alumni Bookfair. Five alumni authors participated in the library’s first book fair hosted during the combined Reunion and Family Weekend. |

Friends gave generously this year, contributing $122,934 to help build the library’s collection. Professor Irene Tinker donated a flagship gift of $25,000 to establish the Irene Tinker Women in International Development Endowed Fund. This fund was created to support the creation and development of a Women in International Development Archives in the library’s Special Collections.
In FY2006, $170,000 of accumulated Friends gift funds were used for purchasing print and electronic resources. |
