Collection Development Mission Statement:
This function team coordinates the collection development program, which supports the library mission to build quality collections that serve university goals for learning, teaching and research. Specific activities include allocation of the materials budget; maintaining faculty and donor communication in areas that affect the collection; reception, selection, cataloging, and distribution of gift items; and the replacement of lost and damaged items. The function team maintains a collaborative relationship with the Collection Management Team of library faculty with subject and operational expertise to create policies related to collection content and management, to evaluate and support collections in all formats, and to assess the impact of curricular programs on collection resources.
Collection Development Policy Statement:
The American University Library serves as a gateway to information and promotes intellectual discovery for the university community. Collection development policies aim to provide quality collections that support learning and teaching, as reflected in academic curricula and related research.
For more information and specific, subject-based collection policies, please see the Collection Management Team web site.
Gifts program:
The American University Library welcomes and appreciates contributions of gifts-in-kind. Donors of books and other materials strengthen collections that support the teaching and research activities of the university.
Any book the library accepts becomes the property of American University Library. The library reserves the right to retain the gift, to determine how it will be cataloged and where it shall be housed. Books the library cannot use may be distributed to other libraries in the United States or overseas. The library acknowledges the donation of gifts-in-kind by letter. The library is prohibited from appraising the dollar value of any donated book.
